The typical Mystery Shopping contractual
agreement works as follows:

THREE principal members are used in this industry:
 

A) COMPANY: The company typically requires the services of a Mystery Shopper(s).

B) MYSTERY SHOPPING CONSULTANT: This firm actually contracts with Mystery Shoppers and companies. The Mystery Shopping Consultant is best described as an employment agency hired by the company to retrieve the services of Mystery Shoppers.

C) MYSTERY SHOPPERS: People like you who actually accept assignments and visit specific business establishments to measure pre determined service criteria.

The process will normally work as follows:

1) A company requiring feedback on their level of customer satisfaction will hire a "CONSULTANT" firm that is an expert in
Mystery Shopping Services. Typically, these firms will have a data bank of individuals prepared to work as Mystery Shoppers.

2) The "CONSULTANT" firm is paid a fee by the company to send out their Mystery Shoppers into the field.

3) The "CONSULTANT" in turn contracts with individuals such as yourself to perform this service. The individual shoppers are NOT employees of the CONSULTANT. They are treated as independent contractors.

4) The Mystery Shoppers complete their assignments and return the data to the CONSULTANT. The CONSULTANT then sends
the information to the company and receives payment.

5) The Mystery Shopper is then paid for their services by the CONSULTANT either as a fee or with the opportunity to receive free merchandise or meals.
 

MYSTERY SHOPPERS  The Mystery Shopper is typically paid between $ 15.00 and $ 20.00 per shop. Some assignments do not pay but offer the Mystery Shopper free merchandise or meals. Furthermore, Mystery Shoppers are generally not contracted regularly.

COMPANY  The large Fortune 500 company contracting for Mystery Shoppers through the services of the consulting firm probably can afford the high fees associated with these services. However, smaller companies requiring Mystery Shoppers are find these costs more difficult. They are paying high fees for a Mystery Shopper who goes out into the field.

CONSULTANTS  Therefore the CONSULTANTS are simply offering a means to provide labor. They are offering an EMPLOYMENT AGENCY service or in this case a INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR AGENCY.
